Long tail keywords are the holy grail of online marketing. Whether you are running Pay per Click ads or content marketing, the competition is tough.
Ranking high on Google for head keywords is not possible especially if you are running a new blog or website.
But that does not mean you have to give it up all…
You can get out of the stiff completion by using long tail keywords in your content. Such keywords are usually easy to rank even if your website is not yet well established.
What is a long tail keyword?
Let’s quickly answer the long tail keywords definition…
A long tail keyword is a keyword that is more specific with low search volume. For example, if you search the keyword “hemorrhoid treatment”, the websites on the first page can hardly be beaten.
To escape this stiff competition, you should choose the long tail keywords related to the main seed keyword.
For example, the following are long tail keyword for the seed word hemorrhoid remedies.
- home remedies for hemorrhoids during pregnancy
- painful external hemorrhoids home remedies
These are good examples of a long tail keywords that are more specific, highly targeted and more likely to convert because they are deeper down the conversion funnel.
How To Identify Long Tail Keywords?
Long tail keywords usually have low search volume, low competition (keyword difficulty) and are usually more than three words.
To find long tail keywords, we can use free tools like

- Related Searches
In the Google search bar, you will type the main keyword and Google automatically completes your query.
Choose the ones with four or more words and list them down. These are good long tail keywords that you can later filter according to SEO difficulty and integrate them in your content for easy ranking.
The main keyword here is “how to find ling tail keywords” but google has given us more highly trageted and focused keywords that are more specific. These are all long tail keywords.
Another way to do this is by going down the search engine result page (SERP). Here, you will find a list of terms entitled related searches. All these are long tail keywords.
Another free tool we can use is Ubersuggest. If you type your seed keyword in the ubersuggest search bar, it will give you a huge list of long tail keywords with their search volume and cost per click metrics (CPC).
I want to make this very clear. Ubersuggest, Google or any other free keyword research tool can only give you a list of keywords but will never provide you with the data you need to determine the most profitable keywords for easy ranking or profitable PPC campaigns.
And this takes us down here…
How To Find Profitable Long Tail Keywords?
After you have gathered your list of keywords, the next step is to choose the most profitable ones. You will want accurate answers to the following questions:
- How many times is this keyword searched per month (search volume)?
- How difficult is it to rank for (difficulty score)?
- What is the average cost for PPC (if you are running PPC ads)?
- Which keywords are my competitors ranking for (competitor analysis)?
The search volume is important here because two keywords can have almost the same keyword difficulty but different search volume. It obvious that the one with better search volume will be chosen.
Long tail keywords usually have low search volume but when combined, they can drive huge traffic. That’s the trick. The last question has to do with competitor keyword analysis. Here, you will want to know which keywords your competitors are ranking for and use them in your content.
If you are properly equipped with these metrics, you can make informed and highly profitable data-driven marketing decisions. You can easily rank for your keywords.
